Not all GWA calculators use the correct PUP grading system. Some simply add your grades and divide by the number of subjects, but PUP uses a weighted average. Your credit units decide how much each subject counts in your final GWA, so not every subject has the same weight. How to Compute Your PUP GWA (Step-by-Step)

Adding your grades and dividing by the number of subjects will give you the wrong number. PUP weighs every grade by its units, and these are the steps to calculate it correctly.

Add all your academic subjects and their credit units

In most PUP programs, PE and NSTP are not included in the GWA, so leave them out according to your campus or department guidelines. Enter the correct units for each subject before moving to the next step.

Multiply every grade by its credit units

This shows how much each subject adds to your final GWA. For example, a 1.75 grade in a 3-unit subject gives 5.25 grade points. Do the same calculation for each subject in your list.

Divide total grade points by total credit units

The final answer is your semester GWA. This shows your overall academic performance based on all your subjects and their credit units.

Example: A 1.50 in a 5-unit subject, 1.75 in a 3-unit subject, and 2.25 in another 3-unit subject give 19.50 grade points. Divide 19.50 by 11 total units, and your semester GWA is 1.77. That is close to the Dean’s List, so a better next semester could help you qualify.
One important thing: An INC grade must be completed before the deadline. If not, it automatically becomes a 5.00 at PUP, which can affect your GWA.

A 3.00 is the lowest passing grade at PUP. A 4.00 means you still need to finish the required work before it becomes a passing grade. The percentage may be a little different at some campuses, so check your registrar’s grading table if needed.

PUP Dean’s List, President’s Lister, and Latin Honors

PUP gives three levels of academic honors for strong performance:

Dean’s List

Students with a 1.75 or better semester GWA can qualify for the Dean’s List. You also need to complete your required subjects and have no failing grades. If you meet these rules, you can receive this academic honor.

President’s Lister

This is a higher academic honor. Students with a semester GWA of 1.50 or better may qualify for this award. Not many students know about it, but it is one of the highest recognitions at PUP.

Latin Honors at Graduation

These honors are based on your final cumulative GWA. In general, 1.00–1.20 may qualify for Summa Cum Laude, 1.21–1.45 for Magna Cum Laude, and 1.46–1.75 for Cum Laude. You must also have no failing grades on your transcript.
