3 UP Grading Rules Most Students Get Wrong

UP does three things differently and each one changes your final number. Here are the rules students most often get wrong:

UP grades follow fixed steps

You will only see grades like 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2.00, 2.25, 2.50, 2.75, and 3.00. Numbers such as 1.60 or 2.40 are not official UP grades. If a calculator gives you those values, it is not using the correct UP grading rules.

A 4.00 is not a failing grade at UP

It is a conditional grade, giving you one academic year to take the removal exam. If you pass the exam, your grade changes to 3.00. If you do not, it becomes 5.00. So take that removal exam seriously.

Do not include PE and NSTP

Only academic subjects and their units are used to calculate your average. If you include PE or NSTP, your result will not match your official UP GWA.

UP also gives special awards for excellent semester performance. A semester GPA of 1.45 or better earns the University Scholar award, while a 1.75 or better earns the College Scholar award. These awards are based on your semester average and other university requirements.

How to Calculate Your UP GWA

Add your academic subjects only

Do not include PE or NSTP, because they are not counted in your average. Make sure you enter all your academic subjects before moving to the next step.

Multiply each grade by its credit units

This gives you the grade points for each subject. For example, if you earn a 1.75 in a 3-unit subject, you get 5.25 grade points. Repeat this step for all your academic subjects before moving on.

Divide total grade points by total units

The result is your semester GWA, which shows your overall academic performance for that semester.

Example: Grades of 1.50 (5 units), 1.75 (3 units), and 2.00 (3 units) → 7.50 + 5.25 + 6.00 = 18.75 ÷ 11 units = 1.70 — inside the College Scholar range, and on track for Cum Laude.

Latin honors need more than the number. UP also checks residency and unit-load rules, so the University Registrar has the final word.

Frequently Asked Questions
